CATS Faculty Johnson Samuel Receives NSF CAREER Award

Precision manufacturing expert Johnson Samuel, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has won a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Samuel will use the five-year, $400,000 grant to investigate the fundamental effect of bone microstructural components on its machining responses. The CAREER Award is given to faculty members at the beginning of their academic careers and is one of NSF’s most competitive awards, placing emphasis on high-quality research and novel education initiatives.

With his CAREER project, titled “Microstructure-Specific Machining Strategies for Bone,” Johnson will test the hypothesis that age/bone-type related variations seen in the microstructural components of bone have an influence on its critical machining responses such as surface integrity, cutting forces, tool-wear and chip morphology.
