Dr. Steve Buelte has been promoted to Research Scientist in the Center of Automation Science and Technologies (CATS). Steve's strong background in fuel cell and other electrochemical systems has already significantly benefitted existing CATS' research programs. We look forward to Steve's continuing contribution in his new role. A brief summary of Steve's professional background is attached below.
Steve Buelte's bio:
Dr. Steve Buelte’s background includes a core focus on fuel cell technologies, from both industrial and academic perspectives. He received a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2011 while studying electrodes for electrochemical hydrogen pumps, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Alfred University in 1998. Prior to returning to graduate school, he was worked for 7 years as a research engineer at Plug Power, a prominent fuel cell developer located in Latham, NY. While at Plug Power, his responsibilities included design, rapid prototyping, and testing of fuel cell stack components. Dr. Buelte's research focus at the CATS has focussed on methods to reduce fuel cell manufacturing costs. His core expertise includes performance, endurance, and diagnostic testing of multiple fuel cell chemistries including Proton Exchange Membranes, Phosphoric Acid and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. Additional expertise includes application of SEM, XRF and XRD to evaluate fuel cell electrode materials. Current research activities include a study of the effects of manufacturing improvements on fuel cell performance, and structure and development of fuel cell quality control methodologies. Dr. Buelte's future research interests involve the development of a novel catalyst layer incorporating manufacturability with high durability.
